O'Brien Contractors' Managing Director wins Business Person of the Year Award at the Pride of Warwick District Awards Leamington Spa, 09 July 2013 Peter O'Brien, Managing Director of O'Brien Contractors, a specialist civil engineering firm providing best-practice, cost-effective design and build services for a wide range of construction projects, has been chosen as the Business Person of the Year in the inaugural Touch FM Pride of Warwick District Awards. The award recognises a business person who shows a genuine entrepreneurial spirit and has contributed to the business community in the Warwick District. Peter O'Brien was chosen for his fortitude in the face of adversity, which saw him bring the company his father founded through very difficult times following the global financial crisis to achieve its most successful year ever in 2013. Brookfield Multiplex is expected to be appointed main contractor on the £290m Principal Place development in Shoreditch, London, despite Skanska and Sir Robert McAlpine previously being shortlisted for the scheme.
Brookfield Multiplex is currently engaged on advanced design work on the 50-foot tower, and is expected to take on the main build contract when a pre-let is found, Construction News has learned.The 600,000 sq ft office tower is on hold until a pre-let is secured for a “substantial” part of the office building.

Contracts have been exchanged to build a 500 bed hotel in the first commercial deal on the 2012 Olympic site. Starboard Atlantic Hotels has agreed to buy the site from joint venture partners Lend Lease and London & Continental Railways. The 275,000 sq ft hotel will overlook the former 2012 Athletes Village and includes long-stay rooms plus conventional four star hotel facilities. A reserved matters planning application will be submitted later this year with the building scheduled to open in 2016.

Vinci is demanding that all of its suppliers sign-up with an HGV safety scheme. The move follows a spate of accidents involving cyclists and construction delivery lorries. Vinci will now demand that suppliers secure bronze accreditation with the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS).
