Big food chains lead retail building
During 2010, supermarkets accounted for two-thirds of all spending on construction in the sector, compared with 30 per cent in 2007, according to Glenigan, the building research group.
“A lot of the spend is driven by [supermarkets] expanding into non-food areas, such as electrical goods, and needing to extend their existing stores to accommodate it,” said Allan Wilén, economics director at Glenigan.
