Plans for the £270 million critical care unit at Cwmbran resume.
Mothballed plans to create Wales' first super-hospital for the critically ill have been put back on the agenda. Development of a proposed £270m specialist hospital in Cwmbran was put on hold in January, 2009.
Now the critical care unit has been included in the five-year plan of Aneurin Bevan Health Board, which runs NHS services in the former Gwent area. Specialist and Critical Care Centre will have more than 400 beds, including high intensity coronary , critical care and strokes unit beds, more than 200 adult inpatients beds from complex surgery, with intensive care and high dependency backup, more than 40 neo-natal cots, a 50-plus bedded maternity unit, again with more than 50 beds.
The centre still requires planning permission and approval by the Welsh Government through the business case process.
