Network Rail's proposal for the £250 million Norton Bridge Rail improvements will involve the construction of a new rail junction together with signalling and track enhancements. The scheme will involve the construction of up to 6.8km of new rail track with various cuttings and embankments, as well as a railway bridge over the West Coast Mainline. Options are being considered to upgrade Norton Bridge Junction to separate the path of cross country trains between Birmingham and Manchester from fast services between London and the North West. Network Rail's application for an order was accepted as valid for examination by the Planning Inspectorate on 10th January 2013. Approval for the project is expected to be granted by Easter 2014, with work commencing late 2014 to be completed by 2017.
