Wates Construction has won a £19m contract to redevelop the site of Britain's oldest iron-framed building. The project will see the restoration of seven listed buildings at Flax Mill Maltings in Shrewsbury, including its main mill, built using iron in 1797. The work also includes bringing back into use some of the historic facilities on the site, including the kiln, the dye and stove house and the offices and stables. Shropshire Council is waiting to find out whether it will receive £12.8m from the Heritage Lottery Fund to pay for the project, and expects work to start in September if it does.
